Sting Tunes: Bridging Punk, Pop, and Jazz
Sting is an English musician who, before embarking on a successful solo career, fronted the band The Police alongside Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers.
Between his solo work and his time with The Police, Sting has delivered a remarkable catalogue of hits, including Roxanne, Every Breath You Take, Fragile, Englishman In New York, So Lonely, Shape Of My Heart, Fields Of Gold, It’s Probably Me, Seven Days, and Message In A Bottle.
He’s also made guest appearances on an astonishing range of albums by artists such as Les Paul, Melody Gardot, Shaggy, Ricky Martin, All Saints, Sheryl Crow, James Taylor, Tony Bennett, Sam Moore, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Black Eyed Peas, Craig David, Tina Turner, and Phil Collins. Perhaps most famously, he provided backing vocals on Dire Straits’ smash hit Money For Nothing.
Including his work with The Police, Sting has sold over 100 million records worldwide.
His accolades include seventeen Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, one Golden Globe, an Emmy, and four Oscar nominations.
Recognition started to pour in during the new millennium. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2000), was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2002), and then the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Police (2003). He was awarded a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II (2004), honoured by the Kennedy Center (2014), and received the prestigious Polar Music Prize (2017).
Sting also appears regularly on “greatest of all-time” lists. He was ranked #62 on Paste’s 100 Best Living Songwriters, #63 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Rock, and #80 on Q magazine’s Greatest Musical Stars of the 20th Century.
His most recent release, 44/876, is a collaboration with Shaggy. Naturally, it earned him yet another Grammy in 2019.
