She Loves You Chords: Learn the progressions
The Beatles She Loves You had much more sophisticated chords than I first assumed when I first sat down to transcribe this classic.
What I discovered was a perfect blend of blues and pop using Minor Pentatonic licks and chord variations such as the IVm, paired with standard diatonic pop progressions.
Let’s work our way through the arrangement and see how the Fab Four put this one together, starting with the intro chorus, here are the chords, with Roman Numerals.
| Em (VI) | Em | A7 (IIx) | A7 |
| C | C (IV) | G (I) | G (riff 1) |
In the key of G, we start on chord VI (Em), although because an A7 appears after this, it feels like a II – V.
When the C chord comes in we feel like we’ve been on a bit of a harmonic journey since A to C is close to A to Am.
We finish off on a G chord, which is chord I. Although the bluesy-sounding lick (you need TAB for this, here’s a link: She Loves You – Guitar Lesson with TAB.) which appears in the last bar uses the G Minor Pentatonic. Again, breaking the rules!
Perhaps this makes the diatonic verse that follows feel like a release with its somewhat standard chords.
||: G (I) | Em (VI) | Bm (III) | D7 (V) :||
Next, let’s look at She Loves You’s bridge chords. Here we start going outside the diatonic world of G major again. The VIm (Cm) is the standout chord.
The Em descending chord lick using the madd9 is also a nice touch, here are all the chords:
| G (I) | G | Em (VI) | Emadd9 Em |
| Cm (IVm) | Cm | D (V) | D7 (riff 1) |
Another nice trick is that the same lick we had over a G chord in the chorus, is now happening again in the bridge, although the chord is now a D. Bridges 2 and 3 don’t have this lick, so then it’s just a D7.
Finally, the outro is recycling the IVm idea and modifying the chord lick we had over Em to now be over G as well, like this:
| Cm (IVm) N.C | D7 (V) | G (I) | Em (VI) |
| Cm N.C | D7 N.C |2/4 N.C |
On the final line of the outro, the chord names go nuts! Clearly, it was not worked out by name and then played, but by maintaining the same riff, just changing the bass note and therefore chord name, like this:
| G (I) | Gmaj7 G6 | Em (VI) | Emadd9 Em |
| C (IV) Cmaj7 | Cmaj7#11 Cmaj7/E | G (I) | G |
As you play with the original recording, you’ll soon discover how you won’t be in tune with the original recording.
Usually, people will dismiss this as; they “didn’t tune up properly”, or, “the tape machine was too slow on playback”.
Whatever it was, when it comes to She Loves You, the band is 1hz away from the magical frequency of the universe, 432. Using my online guitar tuner, you can set it to 433 and be in perfect sync with the band.

She Loves You is a perfect example of an early Beatles hit!
As a worldwide #1 hit, She Loves You was The Beatles’ 4th big hit after Love Me Do, Please Please Me, and From Me to You, all released in 1962/63.
This type of rock and roll-infused pop song would continue to be their formula until 1965 with tunes such as I Want to Hold Your Hand, I Saw Her Standing There, Twist and Shout, Can’t Buy Me Love, and A Hard Day’s Night.
It’s pretty remarkable how many tunes like this Beatles released that all went high in the charts and defined the early years of the band.
If you’re in a band that plays these types of tunes, you really can’t do much better than including most of these classics from the Fab Four.
I really feel that playing these types of songs in a band is an essential part of a guitarist’s education, skipping this step is not advisable.
