The Queen of Country-Pop!

Shania’s first album came in 1993 when she was in her late 20s. Produced by the guy who owned the record label she was signed to and a seasoned country songwriter, Shania had little say in the debut which bore her name.

A commercial failure and later disowned by Shania, she managed to stay with the label but switched producers to her future husband and legendary AC/DC producer Mutt Lange.

Together, they came up with The Woman In Me (1995), which sold much better than the debut, so much so it made Shania a household name.

With 20 million copies sold and her first #1 single with Any Man Of Mine, she started crafting her masterpiece.

Released in 1997, Come On Over was an enormous success. The fruitful partnership between Shania and Mutt had by now become a marriage, and together they wrote several huge singles. Man! I Feel Like A Woman, You’re Still The One, and That Don’t Impress Me Much all became classics, still played by bands and DJs the world over to this day.

In total, Come On Over had 12 (!) singles. That leaves us with just 4 album tracks, pretty crazy. It stayed on the charts worldwide for years and ended up selling 40 million copies, making Shania one of the best-selling artists of all time. In fact, she is the best-selling female country artist of all time.

Following the insane success of Come On Over, the next album (Up!) came in 2002. Standout tunes here are I’m Gonna Getcha Good!, Forever and for Always, and her biggest-selling single in Europe, perfectly named Ka-Ching!

The unusual thing about Up! was that it came in three versions, Red, which was a pop version of the album, Green, a country version, and Blue, an Indian (!) version. It was very odd, and as far as I know, this concept was never repeated, by anyone.

In 2004, Shania released her Greatest Hits, and with it came the single Party for Two. This became her 16th top-ten hit but would also mark the end of an era.

Following her Greatest Hits, Shania’s health declined as she was diagnosed with Lyme disease. It would take until 2011 before her next album came.

Now divorced from Mr. Lange, the hits had dried up, and the golden years were over. Still, Shania has kept releasing material, held a Las Vegas residency, and toured the world many times over. With that kind of back catalogue and a dedicated fan base, one suspects she’s hardly struggling.
