Rockin’ All Over the World Chords: Master the Classic Honky-Tonk Progression
Apart from choruses 3 and 5, Rockin’ All Over the World follows the same chord progression throughout. C is I, F is IV, and G is V, like this:
||: C5 (C6) | C5 (C6) |
| F5 (F6) | F5 (F6) |
| C5 (C6) | G5 (G6) | C5 (C6) | C5 (C6) :||
The chords in brackets indicate that they appear and disappear rather than being played continuously, so I’ve used brackets instead of writing them out multiple times.
This is an eight-bar honky-tonk blues, and I can’t think of a better tune to build your honky-tonk stamina. Simply play along with the original and aim to keep up!
As you practise with Status Quo, you might find that tuning slightly sharp—around 442 or 444 Hz—feels better. You can use my online guitar tuner to achieve this.
I’ve also designed some TAB for each section so you can play this correctly with your band. I went the extra mile and created a fingerstyle, country-esque version using open-position chords as well.
The reason? Honky-tonk comping can be extremely stretchy (and even painful), so I’ve come up with an alternative to help you avoid RSI—because that’s no picnic!

Once you’ve worked through the TAB, a simple chord chart is all you need to keep track of the structure. Here’s one I made for you.

Rockin’ All Over The World is a cover
English rockers Status Quo might be the only band to have truly made the honky-tonk sound their own—without directly referencing Chuck Berry!
And what better example than their signature song, Rockin’ All Over the World? While Status Quo didn’t write it—John Fogerty did—they certainly made it their own.
Another notable artist to cover this tune is Bruce Springsteen, but more importantly, it has been a staple for countless working rock ’n’ roll bands since 1975—often as an encore, keeping it relevant for decades.
Interestingly, most of Status Quo’s biggest hits were covers, with Whatever You Want being a rare exception. Ironically, that track still sounds like every other Status Quo song!
There’s a lesson here: a great band doesn’t just need songs—it needs a sound.
