On Broadway Chords: Learn the progressions
George Benson‘s version of The Drifters’ old tune, On Broadway, has terrified guitar players for years.
Using just a simple V – IV style chord progression, On Broadway’s chords work as a platform for George’s insane improvisations.
Before we get that far, we have gone through two key changes and had a unique take on the blues format where we over chords I and IV constantly move down a tone.
Here’s verse 2’s chord progression, we are in the key of A.
| A7 (I) G (bVIIx) | A7 G7 | A7 G | A7 G7 |
| A7 G | A7 G7 | A7 G | A7 G7 |
| D7 (IV) C (bIIIx) | D7 C7 | D7 C | D7 D#7 (#IV) E7 (V) |
| A7 G | A7 G7 | A7 G | A7 G7 |
In the TAB lesson, we start with the bass line before we build the chords that support the vocal and solo without getting in the way.
Here’s a link to the TAB lesson: On Broadway – Guitar Lesson with TAB.
Returning from that adventure, this slightly disappointing chord chart is helpful once you get over the initial confusion.
On Broadway Chord Chart | PDF + IReal Pro
It’s easier to explain the chords for On Broadway than it is to write a chart. Let me try:
- The progression is a 16-bar blues that moves chromatically from Ab to A, to Bb.
- We stay on the I chord for 8 bars. We spend 4 bars on chord IV, then back to chord I for 4 bars
- Each chord is played with another chord a tone below in every bar
- Point 3 is true apart from in the last bar of the IV chord when we move up chromatically to chord V
- To change the key, we move up and play the main riff until the singing starts
Putting all that in a chart was hard because the chromatic movement of chords IV to V needed so much space.
The end result does not capture the simplicity of the chord progression idea which I feel is simpler than the chart portray.
I could have solved this by using two pages for the chord chart, it would have looked simpler and put the idea across better, but it would have been a two-page chart…
Anyway, should you want to download this chart, here’s a PDF: On Broadway Chord Chart PDF.
This chord chart was created using iReal Pro, here’s a link to that file: On Broadway iReal Pro.
Using this and the iRealPro app, you can change the key but perhaps more importantly, you can aim to do a better job at displaying On Broadway’s chords than I have.
Or, you could perhaps spend the time you saved on transcribing George’s licks instead!
Before George, it was Phil Spector who played guitar for On Broadway!
Husband and wife songwriting team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil originally wrote On Broadway for the Cookies, although the Crystals (their big hit was Da Do Ron Ron) released it first.
Barry and Cynthia were no one-hit wonders, they also penned classics such as Here You Come Again for Dolly Parton, Make Your Own Kind of Music for Mama Cass, and Walking In The Rain for The Ronettes.
But let’s try to stay on track, the first band to have a big hit with On Broadway was The Drifters (who also did Under The Boardwalk).
On The Drifters version, which was released in 1963, a young Phil Spector played the guitar solo.
George Benson must have heard this and thought – hold my beer! His 1978 live version from Weekend in L.A. and subsequent live performances have terrified guitar players ever since.
My favorite is an amateur recording which I’ve included in the playlist at the top of this page. It’s the look on the 2nd guitar player’s face that does it for me!
