Chord Progressions – What’s Going On?
Lost in Music features a mesmerising chord progression that blurs the line between D Aeolian (VI) and D Dorian (II).
If the tune stayed strictly in D Dorian, we’d expect Bm7b5 and G major. In D Aeolian, those become Bbmaj7 and Gm instead. Nile Rodgers moves fluidly between the two—Dorian up to the Bbmaj7, then briefly Aeolian—creating a hypnotic lift-and-release effect throughout.

The chorus pivots rhythmically around a C chord, which can be heard as both I or V, depending on where you are in the progression:
