Give me the melody, that’s all that I ever need, the music is my salvation.

All that I could say, I won’t give up my music, not me, not now, no way, no how, uh, oh.

Lost In Music Chords: Learn the progressions

Lost In Music has a very interesting chord progression, it’s like we’re in both D Aeolian (chord VI) and D Dorian (chord II) at the same time.

If it’s D Dorian, we should have had a Bm7b5. If it’s Aeolian, we get a Bbmaj7.

If it’s D Dorian, we get a G (chord V), if it’s Aeolian, we should have a Gm (chord II).

Basically, what we have here is a modal interchange on a loop where D is always Dorian, until that Bbmaj7 when D is Aeolian.

The placement of the chords in the bar, combined with this modal interchange drives the song forward, making the audience dance all night.

Lost In Music was one of four hits from the album We Are Family!

Another smash hit from the Album We Are Family by Sister Sledge we have Lost In Music. Released as a single, it had Thinking Of You as a B-side!

The hits from Nile and Bernard during this time were outrageous, only comparable with what The Beatles produced a decade earlier.

You can work out how they put this Disco classic together by studying the chords and lyrics above. The secret behind it is a modal interchange.

Using the video above and the chords and lyrics, play along by simply strumming the chords, this will give you a sense of how the harmony is constructed.

Once you got that down, start imitating Nile Rodgers‘s funky guitar.
