Linda Perry: The Songwriter Behind Pink and Christina Aguilera’s Biggest Hits

Linda Perry is a singer-songwriter, record producer, and engineer, best known for her 1992 hit What’s Up with her band 4 Non Blondes.

If you don’t recognise the song by its title, it’s likely because many people mistakenly call it What’s Going On.

But Linda is far from a one-hit wonder. After the worldwide success of What’s Up, she transitioned into a career as a songwriter and producer, crafting more hits like Get The Party Started by Pink (often mistakenly referred to as I’m Coming Up!).

Perhaps her most famous contribution is writing and producing Beautiful, with Christina Aguilera’s powerful vocals.

Beyond these massive hits, Linda has worked with a wide range of artists, including Adele, Jewel, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Faith Hill, KT Tunstall, Courtney Love, and Dolly Parton.

Not just a behind-the-scenes talent, Linda has also recorded her own versions of popular songs, such as Creep by Radiohead and Mad World by Tears For Fears.

In 2017, she launched a record label and artist management company called We Are Hear, further cementing her influence in the music industry.

Go With Elmo Lovano featuring Linda Perry

In this episode, Linda Perry offers a candid, experience-driven perspective on creativity, success, and the realities of the music industry. Drawing from her journey—from leading 4 Non Blondes to becoming a hit songwriter for artists like Pink and Christina Aguilera—she emphasizes that authenticity is the foundation of meaningful art.

Perry explains that her songwriting process is rooted in emotion rather than structure or trends. She resists formulaic approaches, instead trusting instinct and vulnerability to guide the work. For her, the best songs come from honest expression, not calculated attempts to create hits. This philosophy has shaped her reputation as a producer who prioritizes the artist’s identity over commercial expectations.

A major theme is her critique of the modern music industry. Perry argues that many artists are pushed into boxes by labels, algorithms, and branding pressures, which can stifle originality. She contrasts this with earlier eras where individuality and risk-taking were more central. While she acknowledges the opportunities technology provides, she warns that over-reliance on data can dilute artistic voice.

The conversation also touches on resilience. Perry highlights the importance of failure, persistence, and patience, noting that her own path was far from linear. She encourages creatives to embrace setbacks as part of growth rather than signs to quit.

Throughout the episode, Perry comes across as direct, grounded, and deeply committed to artistic integrity. Her advice centers on developing craft, staying true to oneself, and resisting external pressures to conform. The overall message is clear: lasting impact in music—and creativity more broadly—comes from honesty, individuality, and the courage to trust your instincts, even when it goes against the grain.
