Julie London: Jazz Icon, Western Star, and TV Favourite
Julie London released 29 studio albums between 1955 and 1969. Her debut single, Cry Me A River, became her signature tune and greatest commercial success, reaching the U.S. top 10 and eventually selling 3 million copies.
Although many artists have covered it since—including Barbra Streisand, Michael Bublé, Rick Astley, and Elaine Paige—the song remains most closely associated with Julie’s iconic 1955 recording.
Beyond Cry Me A River, she interpreted countless jazz standards, including Fly Me To The Moon, Bye Bye Blackbird, Dream A Little Dream Of Me, A Taste Of Honey, Summertime, and Why Don’t You Do Right.
In addition to her music, Julie enjoyed a moderately successful film career, appearing in a number of Westerns between 1944 and 1959.
She also found lasting fame on television, most notably portraying nurse Dixie McCall in the hit series Emergency! from 1972 to 1978.
