I’m So Excited Chords: Exploring the Progressions and Modal Interchange
I’m So Excited‘s verse and chorus chords are as follows (with Roman numerals):
||: Gm7 (VI) | Gm7 | C9sus4 Cm7 (II) | Cm7 |
| Bb/Eb (I/4) Eb (IV) | Eb | Eb/Bb Bb (I) | Bb :||
The bridge involves modal interchange, as we shift from the key of Gm/Bb to Dm/F. The Cm7 breaks the rules as it functions as Vm, or we could view it as returning to the key of Bb.
| Am7 (III) | Am7 | Gm7 (II) | Dm7 (VI) |
| Am7 | Am7 | Gm7 | Gm7 |
| Cm7 (Vm) | Dm7 (VI) | F (I) | F N.C |
In this style of music, it’s easy to focus solely on the guitar part and forget about the actual chords. However, that would be a mistake, as the guitar part is based on the chords being played.
With this in mind, I’ve designed some TAB to clearly show how the chords are played on the keyboard, followed by the TAB of the guitar part.
This approach is essential if you want to move beyond mere memorization and get to a place where you can write tunes and create guitar parts through improvisation.
Here’s a link to the TAB lesson: I’m So Excited, Guitar Lesson with TAB.
Armed with knowledge of both the keyboard chords and guitar part, you can begin experimenting with the part and making it your own. This chord chart will be helpful during that process.

You’ve probably noticed that the chords in the chart are not identical to the ones with the lyrics at the top of the page.
For example, the C9sus4 and (Cm7) in the chart are represented as C11. As you’ve seen in the TAB, we move between the first two chords several times. Add all those intervals together, and you get a C11.
The purpose of the chord chart is to simplify things as much as possible.

I’m So Excited is The Pointer Sisters’ signature song!
Released in 1982, I’m So Excited initially didn’t catch on as expected. Slightly altered and re-released two years later, it became a top-ten hit in the U.S.
Since then, it has been a staple of the Disco band’s setlist, alongside songs like We Are Family, I Will Survive, Hot Stuff, and Car Wash.
I find it particularly interesting to compare the two versions. While they’re not drastically different, the latter version has that hit quality, while the first sounds more like an album track.
Here’s a link to the original version: I’m So Excited original recording. Without that compressed guitar that pops out in the hit version, it doesn’t drive in the same way. For the hit version, check the first video at the top of this page.
What you as a guitarist can take away from this is that you should give full attention to your guitar part. Commit to it—otherwise, you might end up with a version that gets overlooked, just like that first mix.
