I’m So Excited Chords: Learn the progressions
I’m So Excited‘s verse and chorus chords are as follows (with Roman Numerals):
||: Gm7 (VI) | Gm7 | C9sus4 Cm7 (II) | Cm7 |
| Bb/Eb (I/4) Eb (IV) | Eb | Eb/Bb Bb (I) | Bb :||
The bridge is a modal interchange as we are now in the key of Dm/F, not Gm/Bb. Then, the Cm7 breaks the rules as it’s Vm, or we could see it as being back in the key of Bb again.
| Am7 (III) | Am7 | Gm7 (II) | Dm7 (VI) |
| Am7 | Am7 | Gm7 | Gm7 |
| Cm7 (Vm) | Dm7 (VI) | F (I) | F N.C |
I’ve found that in this style of music, it’s easy to ignore the actual chords and just “learn the guitar part”. This would be a mistake as the guitar is picking out its notes based on the chords.
With this in mind, I’ve designed some TAB clearly showing how the chords are played on the keyboard using TAB, chords, and lyrics. This is then followed by the TAB of the actual guitar part.
This approach is vital if you want to go beyond memorizing and get to a place where you are writing tunes and coming up with guitar parts through improvisation.
I’m So Excited is The Pointer Sisters’ signature song!
The Pointer Sisters‘ signature song I’m So Excited dropped in 1982 but didn’t catch on as expected. Slightly altered and then re-rereleased two years later it became a top ten hit in the U.S.
Since then it has been a given on the Disco band’s set list alongside We Are Family, I Will Survive, Hot Stuff, and Car Wash.
I genuinely find it extremely interesting to compare the two versions which aren’t that different although the latter does sound like a hit, the first more of an album track.
Here’s a link to the old version, without that compressed guitar that pops out, it just doesn’t drive in the same way. For the big hit version, check the first video at the top of this page.
What you as a guitarist can learn from this is that you should take great care of your guitar part and fully commit or you may end up like that first mix – ignored!
