Flowers Chords: Learn the progressions

This tune presents a great challenge for guitarists as there is no guitar on the original recording.

Whenever this happens I start with working out the general chords, then transcribe what is the most stand-out parts to get ideas from it.

In the case of Flowers, the best part is the bass line so I transcribed this and found it to be great fun playing along with the original recording.

From this point, I then developed a few guitar parts and TABBED them all out for you, here’s a link to that part of the lesson: Flowers – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

The main chord progression for Flowers is this (including Roman Numerals):

||: Am7 |(VI) Dm7 (II) | G (V) | Cmaj7 (I) :||

For the bridge, we change the Am7 to an Am, then play Dm7 and E7, a IIIx chord.

For the chorus, we play C/B in the second half of the last bar.

As you come back from the TAB lesson, ready to rumble, don’t forget to bring this chord chart with you to the gig.

Is Flowers a rip-off of a Bruno Mars tune?

There’s an internet rumour going around that Flowers is a disco version of Bruno Mars‘s ballad When I Was Your Man.

This is based on the lyrics, rather than chords and production which is usually what people focus on, like Ed Sheeran‘s Perfect vs Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On.

Or Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines vs another Marvin tune, Got To Give It Up. Or the most obvious, Sam Smith’s Stay With Me vs Tom Petty’s I Won’t Back Down.

Someone has bought some of the rights for Bruno’s tune and they’re the ones who want more money and are now suing Miley.

Anyway, In the case of Miley vs Mars, it’s the lyrics, here’s Bruno Mars:

That I should’ve bought you flowers and held your hand.
Shoulda gave you all my hours, when I had the chance.
Take you to every party, ’cause all you wanted to do was dance.
Now my baby’s dancin’, but she’s dancin’ with another man

And here’s Miley‘s:

I can buy myself flowers. Write my name in the sand.
Talk to myself for hours. Say things you don’t understand.
I can take myself dancing. I can hold my own hand.
Yeah I can love me better than.

I can’t see how this is a rip-off at all, to be honest.

If you feel that stealing songs is not something you want to engage in, I would encourage you to do it anyway, just see it as an exercise, you don’t have to release it!

Songwriting is a craft and the most important ingredient is that you go to work so if there’s no inspiration, rewrite a tune, you never know what may come from it.

To me, Flowers sounds very little like that Bruno Mars tune, instead, I feel Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive may have been the main “inspiration”.
