Juice Chords: Learn the progressions
Based on a four-bar chord progression in the key of Dm, there is only a blues-influenced variation over the F chord, briefly taking us outside the diatonic key.
||: Dm7 (VI) | F7sus4 F7 (I7) | Bbmaj7 (IV) | Bbmaj7 C (V) :||
This is what we call a modal interchange, it creates tension which is needed to make the listener sit up and take notice, but not put them off.
I’ve designed some TAB for how to play the verse, chorus, and tag, as well as a full analysis of how the guitar parts work so well by taking rhythms out, rather than adding to it as the tune builds.
Here’s a link to the TAB lesson: Juice – Guitar Lesson with TAB.
The people behind this hit certainly knew what they were doing, it wasn’t just down to that one clever little outside chord!
Whenever a tune is in a minor key, the first question for me is if it’s Dorian or Aeolian. Usually, when it’s Dance music, Disco or Funk, it’s Dorian.
In the case of Juice, it’s Aeolian and the reason for this can be found in the two chords Bbmaj7 and C. Two major chords a tone apart are always IV – V, making the Dm chord VI.
The variation is clear, the F7 is a modal interchange and should have been chord I which is maj7, not dom7.
The note that has changed/is providing the variation is an Eb, in relation to D, that’s a b9 making that Dm Phrygian, not Aeolian.
Looking at the vocal melody, it’s all D Minor Pentatonic, meaning the melody avoids Dorian, Aeolian, and Phrygian, it’s the chords that provide the modal colours. This is an extremely good songwriting tip!
After you played with Lizzo and studied my TAB, this chord chart is a nice reminder of what the chords for Juice are, but also helps with when the stops happen.

Juice was Lizzo’s first big hit!
Juice was Lizzo’s first hit, it is a single from her major label debut Cuz I Love U (2019).
Looking at her discography, Good As Hell was released before but that didn’t become a hit until re-released just after Juice, also in 2019.
Following these two worldwide hits, Lizzo became a household name and could even bring out the jazz flute without too dark consequences.
The hits following include Rumours, About Damn Time, and as late as 2023, Pink from the movie Barbie, this one was produced by non-other than Mark Ronson.
