Juice Chords – A Funky Blend of Modal Interchange
Based on a four-bar chord progression in the key of Dm, Juice features a blues-influenced variation over the F chord, briefly taking us outside the diatonic key.
||: Dm7 (VI) | F7sus4 F7 (I7) | Bbmaj7 (IV) | Bbmaj7 C (V) :||
This modal interchange introduces tension, making the listener sit up and take notice—but not putting them off.
I’ve designed some TAB for the verse, chorus, and tag, along with a full analysis of how the guitar parts work so well by removing rhythms rather than adding to them as the song builds.

Why Juice is in Aeolian, Not Dorian
When a tune is in a minor key, the first question is whether it’s Dorian or Aeolian. In dance, disco, or funk, Dorian is more common.
However, in Juice, it’s Aeolian, and the reason lies in the Bbmaj7 and C chords. Two major chords a tone apart are always IV – V, meaning Dm functions as VI.
The variation comes with F7, a modal interchange where we’d expect Fmaj7 (chord I). The key note providing this variation is Eb, which in relation to D is a b9, making this moment Phrygian instead of Aeolian.
Interestingly, the vocal melody sticks to D minor pentatonic, avoiding Dorian, Aeolian, and Phrygian—leaving the chords to colour the harmony. This is an excellent songwriting technique!
Once you’ve played along with Lizzo and studied my TAB, this chord chart will serve as a handy reference—also helping you nail the stops in the arrangement.

Juice was Lizzo’s First Big Hit!
Juice was Lizzo’s first big hit, released as a single from her major label debut Cuz I Love You in 2019.
While Good As Hell had been released earlier, it only became a hit after being re-released, also in 2019, following the success of Juice.
These two tracks propelled Lizzo to worldwide stardom, with her becoming a household name and confidently embracing her jazz flute in the process.
Other hits followed, including Rumours, About Damn Time, and, as recently as 2023, Pink from the Barbie movie—produced by none other than Mark Ronson.
