More Streams Than The Beatles: The Rise of Dua Lipa
Born in London to Albanian parents, Dua Lipa shot to global fame in early 2018.
Her self-titled debut album, released in mid-2017, had already been generating buzz, with tracks dating back to 2015. The album produced an impressive eight singles, six of which reached the top 10. The final single, IDGAF, dropped in January 2018.
Just months later, her collaboration with Calvin Harris, One Kiss, catapulted her to superstardom. Released in April 2018, the track debuted at No. 1 and went on to become the best-selling song of the year, with nearly 10 million global sales.
Lipa’s second album, Future Nostalgia (2020), delivered another massive hit with Don’t Start Now. The album sold 1.8 million copies in the U.K. and 7 million in the U.S., with its streaming numbers in South Korea particularly staggering, surpassing 100 million plays.
Five more singles followed, with Levitating emerging as another signature Dua Lipa tune, matching Don’t Start Now in sales.
Her most recent release (as of 2023) is a cover, collaborating on PNAU’s remix of Elton John’s Cold Heart.
A quick look at her Spotify stats reveals just how dominant Dua Lipa’s tunes have become: One Kiss, Don’t Start Now, Levitating, and Cold Heart each boast around 2 billion streams. For perspective, as of 2023, only one Beatles song has surpassed 1 billion streams.
