DNCE: From Backing Band to Breakout Hit with Cake By The Ocean
Behind Cake By The Ocean, we find DNCE, a band formed by members of the live backing group for the Jonas Brothers — a teenage boyband launched through the Disney Channel.
On lead vocals is Joe Jonas, who began his career alongside his brothers at the tender age of 15.
Their debut single did extremely well, and for a moment, the world seemed to expect another boyband breakout, similar to Justin Timberlake’s success after leaving NSYNC. However, for the former Jonas Brothers frontman, this was a real band.
The debut single dropped in September 2015, followed by a self-titled studio album the next year. Unfortunately, the band struggled to follow up on the initial success of Cake By The Ocean.
Another EP came in 2018, but once again, no major hits emerged. In 2019, the Jonas Brothers reunited, releasing their biggest tune yet — Sucker.
I’ve played Cake By The Ocean at gigs, and it always works well, especially when paired with Seven Nation Army — another bass line-led tune in the same key.
If you’re in an original band, it’s worth paying attention to how DNCE arranged Cake By The Ocean. Many bands make the mistake of overcrowding their arrangements, and there’s a lot to learn from how DNCE solved this challenge with this tune.
