Lead singer and guitarist of Pink Floyd!
David Gilmour is an English musician, best known as the guitarist, singer, and one of the songwriters for the legendary band Pink Floyd.
Renowned for his melodic phrasing and exceptional tone, Gilmour stands among the greatest British guitarists, alongside icons like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Brian May, and Mark Knopfler.
His guitar work on timeless tracks such as Comfortably Numb, Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2, Money, Time, The Great Gig in the Sky, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and Wish You Were Here has solidified his place in rock history.
David Gilmour’s Equipment
In addition to his pioneering contributions to psychedelic rock, Gilmour is renowned for his remarkable guitar tone. Over the years, fans have meticulously analyzed his rig. One of the best resources for this is Gilmourish.com, a site run by Norwegian superfan Bjorn Riis. The site delves into Gilmour’s multiple amp setups, the specifications of his Colorsound booster, and his fondness for the Binson Echorec.
Gilmour is also a passionate collector. Notably, he owns one of the first Fender Stratocasters ever made, serial number #0001. While it wasn’t the very first Strat ever built, it’s likely one of the closest. To acquire it, Gilmour helped his guitar tech purchase a house!
Though not the model that became the signature Strat available to the public, Gilmour’s iconic black Strat, equipped with a Seymour Duncan custom-made bridge pickup, is the one most often associated with his sound. This setup allows him to blend the neck and bridge pickups, producing his signature tone.
If you’re thinking of following in Gilmour’s footsteps and emulating his setup, it can be tempting to dive into his gear, but before you consider remortgaging your house, take a look at Keeley’s Dark Side pedal. It’s designed to replicate the sound of Dark Side of the Moon in one compact unit.
That said, if you’re willing to spend a bit more, check out the Pink Flow pedal by JAM. It’s a premium option, but it promises to take Gilmour’s tone even further.
Gilmour has had a profound impact on the guitar gear industry. Every time I hear his playing, I find myself itching to buy more gear to chase that perfect tone!
