Chords + Lyrics | Shape of You

Intro

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||

Verse 1

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
The club isn’t the best place to find a lover so the bar is where I go.
Me and my friends at the table doing shots drinking fast and then we talk slow.
And you come over and start up a conversation with just me and trust me I’ll give it a chance now.
Take my hand, stop, put Van the Man on the jukebox and then we start to dance, and now I’m singing like.

Bridge 1

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
Girl, you know I want your love, your love was handmade for somebody like me.
Come on now, follow my lead, I may be crazy, don’t mind me.
Say, boy, let’s not talk too much, grab on my waist and put that body on me.
| C#m F#m7 | A N.C |
Come on now, follow my lead, come, come on now follow my lead.

Chorus 1

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
I’m in love with the shape of you, we push and pull like a magnet do.
Although my heart is falling too, I’m in love with your body.
And last night you were in my room and now my bedsheets smell like you.
Every day discovering something brand new, I’m in love with your body.

Chorus tag 1

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
Oh-I-oh-I-oh-I-oh-I, I’m in love with your body.
Oh-I-oh-I-oh-I-oh-I, I’m in love with your body.
Oh-I-oh-I-oh-I-oh-I, I’m in love with your body.
Every day discovering something brand new, I’m in love with the shape of you.

Verse 2

| C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B |
One week in we let the story begin, we’re going out on our first date.
| C#m F#m7 | A N.C |
You and me are thrifty, so go all you can eat, fill up your bag and I fill up a plate.
| C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B |
We talk for hours and hours about the sweet and the sour and how your family is doing okay.
| C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B |
Leave and get in a taxi, then kiss in the backseat, tell the driver make the radio play, and I’m singing like.

Bridge 2

Girl, you know I want your love, your love was handmade for somebody like me.
Come on now, follow my lead, I may be crazy, don’t mind me.

Come on now, follow my lead, come, come on now, follow my lead.

Shape of You Backing Tracks | Chord Analysis

Above, you’ll find backing tracks to use when learning Shape of You. I’ve used stem separation to extract the guitar while keeping the drums, bass, horns, and vocals intact.

After studying the chords and TAB, use my backing tracks to prepare for playing this tune with a band.

Chord Progressions – What’s Going On?

Shape of You is built around a four-chord progression with common tones, creating a continuous loop that only varies through stopping or layering new elements.

This approach is likely influenced by Ed Sheeran’s use of the loop pedal, a technique he became known for and continues to incorporate into his music.

The chords follow a VI – II – IV – V progression in the key of C#m, with extensions appearing as:

| C#m (VI) F#m7 (II) | A (IV) (Bsus4) B (V) |

In the TAB, which you find further down this guitar lesson, we break down how this arrangement makes use of common tones, how it can be adapted for solo acoustic guitar, and how it can be developed further.

Once you’ve mastered the TAB and played along with my backing tracks, all you’ll need is a simple chord chart—here’s one I made for you.

Shape of You | TAB

Ed Sheeran’s biggest-selling tune, Shape of You, is based around a four-chord progression and the rhythm 123, 123, 12 — accenting the first beat of each group.

Let’s start by playing just the common tones. This example is a great introduction to the groove and harmonic structure of the song:

Shape of You chords and TAB, example 1.

Make sure you clearly feel the 123, 123, 12 rhythm (these are 16th notes) and understand how the intervals relate to each chord before moving on.

Next, here’s a guitar part that sticks to the rhythm, ignoring the Bsus4 since the rhythmic pattern falls on the bass note:

This is a solid groove to play throughout, especially when playing with a band or looping yourself live.

Now let’s develop the part further by adding chord extensions and changing the rhythm slightly so we can include the Bsus4:

Shape of You chords and TAB, example 3.

In this version, we move from C#m to C#m7, F#m to F#m7. The A stays static, and we alter the pattern to begin with the chord rather than the bass — this gives us the space to include the sus4 extension.

It’s a bit tricky to get right — especially if you’re also singing — but it sounds great once it locks in.

Once you’ve worked your way through all the examples, using the backing tracks, see if you can come up with your own guitar part. Start from the groove, experiment with different chord shapes, and make Shape of You your own.
