24K Magic Chords: Exploring the Harmonic Simplicity Behind the Hit
Apart from the harmonically complex intro, which is played in free time, 24K Magic’s chords are surprisingly repetitive.
The main progression moves between Fm11 and Bbm7, creating a VI–II movement—one of the top 10 chord progressions!
While some of the chord names look complicated, we’re essentially in the key of Fm. The C7#9 (intro) is just a slightly modified III chord, and the Gb7b5 (also intro) is a heavily altered bVIIx chord. Aside from these, it’s all about chord extensions.
The verse, chorus, and middle 8 share the same core progression, with a quick IV–III (Dbmaj7–Cmb6) inserted for variation. The Cmb6 is a clever twist on a standard minor or min7 chord, adding a Phrygian flavour without breaking any harmonic rules—just extending them!

3/4 and 5/4 put together is just two bars of 4/4 but the way this is played, it’s easier to count 3 + 5, or at least that’s how I feel!
