The Everly Brothers: Bye Bye Love, Hello Legacy

Before Don and Phil launched themselves as the Everly Brothers, they sang with their parents as The Everly Family in the 1940s.

After being discovered by Chet Atkins, they began releasing singles as the Everly Brothers, with Chet playing on their first successful release, Bye Bye Love (1957).

This was quickly followed by a string of hits, making them not just a household name, but also a massive influence on artists who would follow in their footsteps—most notably Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Diamond, and even The Beatles.

Their next single, Wake Up Little Susie, went to #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the U.K. This was followed by This Little Girl of Mine, a Ray Charles cover based on the old gospel tune This Little Light of Mine.

Their fourth consecutive big tune was All I Have to Do Is Dream, and we’re still only in 1958.

These four tunes came to define the duo and, in my opinion, were never topped. They did enjoy further chart success for a little while, but Bird Dog, Problems, and (Till) I Kissed You haven’t had quite the same legacy.

It would take until 1960 before their next big hit arrived with Cathy’s Clown.

The rest of the ’60s saw them chart lower and lower, although they continued to tour. By now, they had a strong repertoire to build a show around.

There were also a few interesting covers released—without much success—but they still show the duo’s strong taste in songs. I’m mainly thinking of That’ll Be the Day, Not Fade Away, I Got a Woman, Hound Dog, Carolina in My Mind, and Dancing in the Street.
