She Loves You Chords: Exploring the Bluesy Pop Progressions

She Loves You by The Beatles features more sophisticated chords than I initially assumed when I first sat down to transcribe this classic.

What I discovered was a perfect blend of blues and pop, with minor pentatonic licks and chord variations like the IVm, paired with standard diatonic pop progressions.

Chorus

Let’s work our way through the arrangement and see how the Fab Four put this one together, starting with the intro chorus. Here are the chords, with Roman numerals:

| Em (VI) | Em | A7 (IIx) | A7 |
| C | C (IV) | G (I) | G (riff 1) |

In the key of G, we start on chord VI (Em). However, because an A7 follows, it feels like a II – V progression.

When the C chord comes in, we feel as though we’ve been on a bit of a harmonic journey, since moving from A to C is similar to moving from A to Am.

We finish off on a G chord, which is chord I. The bluesy-sounding lick in the last bar, which you can learn with TAB (here’s a link: She Loves You – Guitar Lesson with TAB), uses the G minor pentatonic, once again breaking the rules!

Verse

Perhaps this makes the diatonic verse that follows feel like a release, with its somewhat standard chords:

||: G (I) | Em (VI) | Bm (III) | D7 (V) :||

Bridge

Next, let’s take a look at the bridge chords of She Loves You. Here, we step outside the diatonic world of G major once again. The standout chord is the IVm (Cm).

The descending Em chord lick using the add9 is a nice touch as well. Here are all the chords:

| G (I) | G | Em (VI) | Emadd9 Em |
| Cm (IVm) | Cm | D (V) | D7 (riff 1) |

Another clever trick is that the same lick we played over a G chord in the chorus is now applied to the D chord in the bridge. However, in bridges 2 and 3, this lick is absent, and it’s just a D7 chord.

Outro

Finally, the outro recycles the IVm idea and modifies the chord lick we had over Em, now applying it to G. It looks like this:

| Cm (IVm) N.C | D7 (V) | G (I) | Em (VI) |
| Cm N.C | D7 N.C |2/4 N.C |

In the final line of the outro, the chord names get a bit chaotic! It’s clear that it wasn’t worked out by naming the chords first and then playing them, but rather by maintaining the same riff while changing the bass note, and therefore the chord name. Here’s how it looks:

| G (I) | Gmaj7 G6 | Em (VI) | Emadd9 Em |
| C (IV) Cmaj7 | Cmaj7#11 Cmaj7/E | G (I) | G |

As you play along with the original recording, you’ll quickly notice how the band isn’t quite in tune with standard tuning. This is often dismissed as “not tuning properly” or “the tape machine running too slowly.”

However, when it comes to She Loves You, the band is just 1Hz away from the magical frequency of 432. Using my online guitar tuner, you can set it to 433Hz to be in perfect sync with the band.

As you play this classic with your own band, you may want to keep this chord chart handy—it will help you navigate the various sections and structure.

A perfect example of an early Beatles hit

As a worldwide #1 hit, She Loves You was The Beatles’ fourth major hit, following Love Me Do, Please Please Me, and From Me to You, all released in 1962 and 1963.

This rock and roll-infused pop style would continue to be their formula until 1965, with songs like I Want to Hold Your Hand, I Saw Her Standing There, Twist and Shout, Can’t Buy Me Love, and A Hard Day’s Night.

It’s remarkable how many songs like this The Beatles released, all of which charted high and defined the early years of the band.

If you’re in a band that plays this type of music, you really can’t go wrong by including many of these timeless classics from the Fab Four.

I truly believe that playing these songs in a band is an essential part of a guitarist’s education—skipping this step is not advisable, just like it wasn’t for the band members themselves!
