Chords + Lyrics | Shape of You

Intro

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||

Verse 1

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
The club isn’t the best place to find a lover so the bar is where I go.
Me and my friends at the table doing shots drinking fast and then we talk slow.
And you come over and start up a conversation with just me and trust me I’ll give it a chance now.
Take my hand, stop, put Van the Man on the jukebox and then we start to dance, and now I’m singing like.

Bridge 1

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
Girl, you know I want your love, your love was handmade for somebody like me.
Come on now, follow my lead, I may be crazy, don’t mind me.
Say, boy, let’s not talk too much, grab on my waist and put that body on me.
| C#m F#m7 | A N.C |
Come on now, follow my lead, come, come on now follow my lead.

Chorus 1

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
I’m in love with the shape of you, we push and pull like a magnet do.
Although my heart is falling too, I’m in love with your body.
And last night you were in my room and now my bedsheets smell like you.
Every day discovering something brand new, I’m in love with your body.

Chorus tag 1

||: C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B :||
Oh-I-oh-I-oh-I-oh-I, I’m in love with your body.
Oh-I-oh-I-oh-I-oh-I, I’m in love with your body.
Oh-I-oh-I-oh-I-oh-I, I’m in love with your body.
Every day discovering something brand new, I’m in love with the shape of you.

Verse 2

| C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B |
One week in we let the story begin, we’re going out on our first date.
| C#m F#m7 | A N.C |
You and me are thrifty, so go all you can eat, fill up your bag and I fill up a plate.
| C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B |
We talk for hours and hours about the sweet and the sour and how your family is doing okay.
| C#m F#m7 | A (Bsus4) B |
Leave and get in a taxi, then kiss in the backseat, tell the driver make the radio play, and I’m singing like.

Shape of You Chords: The Four-Chord Loop That Took Over the World

Shape of You is built around a four-chord progression with common tones, creating a continuous loop that only varies through stopping or layering new elements.

This approach is likely influenced by Ed Sheeran’s use of the loop pedal, a technique he became known for and continues to incorporate into his music.

The chords follow a VI – II – IV – V progression in the key of C#m, with extensions appearing as:

| C#m (VI) F#m7 (II) | A (IV) (Bsus4) B (V) |

In the TAB lesson, we break down how this arrangement makes use of common tones, how it can be adapted for solo acoustic guitar, and how it can be developed further. Here’s the link: Shape of You – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

Once you’ve mastered the TAB and played along with Ed’s original recording, all you’ll need is a simple chord chart—here’s one I made for you.

In the course, we build a guitar part for Shape of You that weaves the riff melody into the chords.

As a preview, here’s the starting point — the bare bones of the melody.

Shape of You chords and TAB, example 1

Ed Sheeran’s biggest hit

Shape of You became Ed Sheeran’s biggest hit, reaching #1 in 34 countries in 2017 and selling over 40 million copies.

Inspired by No Scrubs by TLC, Ed gave a share of the publishing to the song’s original writers—something he refused to do with Marvin Gaye‘s estate over Thinking Out Loud, despite its striking similarity to Let’s Get It On.

Sheeran’s career has been clouded by accusations of songwriting theft, partly due to the common practice among modern producers of using existing tracks as inspiration before reworking them.

I know for a fact that in his early career, Ed moved from one 360 producer to the next, often squeezing in a gig after a full day of writing.

Some may see using reference tracks as unethical, but as the saying goes: Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just go to work!

And if you listen to interviews with Paul McCartney, you’ll realise he did the same—perhaps this really is just how great songs are made…
