A Popular Culture Icon: The Legacy of Peggy Lee
Peggy Lee was an American jazz and traditional pop singer, songwriter, and actress who left an indelible mark on music and film. Her iconic performances, including Black Coffee, Big Spender, Fever, and Why Don’t You Do Right?, solidified her place as one of the most influential voices in jazz and pop music.
In addition to her musical talents, Lee also made her mark in Hollywood. She voiced the character of Darling, the Cocker Spaniel, in Disney’s Lady and the Tramp, showcasing her versatility. Throughout her career, Peggy Lee earned twelve Grammy Award nominations and, in 1995, received the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
One of her most enduring hits, Why Don’t You Do Right, originally called Weed Smokers Dream, was first released in 1936. However, it was Peggy Lee’s 1942 rendition that turned the song into a worldwide jazz/blues standard. Since then, many legendary artists have put their own spin on the tune, cementing its status as a classic.
In 1988, the song received renewed popularity when Jessica Rabbit performed it in the animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, making it one of the biggest songs of that year and introducing it to a new generation of fans. Peggy Lee’s legacy continues to inspire and influence artists across genres.
