One of the 100 people who shaped our world!
Paul Simon is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both as half of the folk duo Simon & Garfunkel and as a solo artist. In 2006, Time magazine named him one of the one hundred people who shaped our world.
His catalogue of hits is vast and includes Homeward Bound, The Sound Of Silence, Scarborough Fair, You Can Call Me Al, The Boxer, Cecilia, Mrs. Robinson, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes, El Condor Pasa, Still Crazy After All These Years, Mother and Child Reunion, Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard, 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, and Graceland.
Yet Paul Simon has also written remarkable songs that never became major hits. Tenderness is one such example—a stunning composition and a true test of harmonic understanding, packed with every trick in the book.
Also deserving mention is American Tune, the only pop song seriously considered as a potential alternative to the American national anthem Stars and Stripes.
If you thought Simon’s best work was limited to the 20th century, think again. His 2016 album Stranger To Stranger includes the brilliant Wristband, proving he hasn’t lost his touch.
What’s truly impressive is how Paul Simon has remained consistent throughout his entire career—something very few artists have achieved. In the first video of the playlist above, he discusses his songwriting process, revealing that much of it comes down to sheer work ethic.
Paul Simon has won twelve Grammy Awards, including three for Album of the Year (Bridge Over Troubled Water, Still Crazy After All These Years, and Graceland). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice—first in 1990 with Simon & Garfunkel, then again in 2001 as a solo artist. He’s also received the Kennedy Center Honors (2002) and the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song (2007).
In 2021, Simon pioneered a new take on the artist portrait with Miracle and Wonder – Conversations with Paul Simon, a 30-hour dialogue with Malcolm Gladwell (Broken Record Podcast) released on Audible.
His most recent release arrived in 2023, and with it, Simon completely reimagined how albums are shared on streaming platforms. For more on that, check out my blog post: Does Paul Simon lead the way with his latest release?
