Parklife Chords: Exploring the Quirky Britpop Harmony
Blur‘s Parklife perfectly exemplifies how the quirky, London-based Britpop outfit differed from Manchester’s Oasis and their Wonderwall.
The chords may seem simple at first, but as you dig deeper, you’ll realise there’s much more to Parklife than it initially appears.
What stands out the most is how the band blends E Ionian with E Aeolian. Typically, modal interchange involves just one chord, but in Parklife’s chorus, it’s a constant blend!
Verse
The Dmaj7sus2 in the main riff could be considered a strange name, or it could simply be seen as the chord that follows it—an “Asus2 moved up a string.” This is a chord written through finger movement, not theory.
I’ve created some TAB to demonstrate this, first showing you how to play it in the open position and then at fret 12. Here’s a link to that part of the lesson: Parklife – Guitar Lesson with TAB.
Chorus
For the chorus, as we move from Bb to B, we signal the E minor blues scale. Moving from C to B, we flirt with Aeolian again, but there’s never an Em chord—it’s always major, like this:
| E Bb5 B5 | B | E C5 B5 | B |
This blending of chords from a minor and major key creates the tension and attitude of the progression, perfectly matching the band’s image.
Once you’ve studied the TAB, played along with the original recording, and familiarised yourself with the chords and lyrics, this simple chord chart is all you’ll need to bring to a rehearsal or gig.

Parklife was Blur’s first big album!
Released in 1994, Parklife was Blur’s third album but the first to achieve significant commercial success, pushing the band beyond the U.K. borders.
Selling over a million copies in the U.K., it performed almost as well in Europe, allowing the band to begin touring on a larger scale.
In addition to the title track, another major single from this album is Girls & Boys.
By the time they released their fourth album the following year, Blur had firmly established themselves as a force in British music, positioned between the super-credible Radiohead and the party-loving Oasis.
