Martha and the Muffins: Echo Beach and the Evolution of a Canadian Icon

In 1977, a band was formed to play at a Halloween party, choosing the name Martha and the Muffins to distance themselves from the typical aggressive punk band names of the era. Their initial plan was to change the name once they found something “better.”

After releasing their debut single Insect Love in 1978 (which was re-recorded in 1979), the band released their debut album Metro Music in 1980. From the album, three singles were released, but it was the lead single Echo Beach that truly made an impact.

Echo Beach became a hit, charting in Canada, Australia, and the U.K., and remains the band’s biggest international success. The song’s success was likely the reason the band stayed together for years, as it gave them a lasting legacy in the world of new wave and alternative music.

Their follow-up album, Trance and Dance, released in the same year, failed to produce any hits. Produced by Mike Howlett, the album marked the departure of Howlett and bass player Finkle. For their third album, This Is the Ice Age, the band brought in Jocelyne Lanois, the sister of Daniel Lanois, who would soon become a renowned producer for U2, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and more. This album, however, didn’t yield any major hits.

Throughout the 1980s, Martha and the Muffins released three more albums. Of note was the single Black Stations/White Stations from the 1984 album Mystery Walk, which featured an anti-racist message. Despite its moderate success, the band’s name was shortened to M + M as band members left, leaving only Mark and Martha. Now a couple, they embraced the new name as a clever rebranding.

In 1992, the couple decided to put the band on hiatus after the birth of their daughter. They pursued side projects, including Martha’s solo children’s album Songs from the Tree House, which won a Canadian Juno Award for Best Children’s Album.

Reunion gigs in the late ’90s and 2000s reignited interest in the band, and in 2020, Martha released a solo album, Marthology, a compilation that celebrated the band’s past. Rumours of a new album have surfaced, with fans eager to find out if it will feature a new Echo Beach moment. Will Daniel Lanois be involved again? Only time will tell.
