Make You Feel My Love chords and progressions
Let’s compare Make You Feel My Love’s chords by Adele with Dylan‘s original. There isn’t much in it actually. The main difference is the key. Adele is in Bb, Bob is in C#.
When it comes to the arrangement, it’s just the end where Bob doesn’t repeat the final line, he goes for another instrumental.
The most difficult aspect of Make You Feel My Love’s chords is actually the key. To make it easier to understand, I’ll show you four angles, Adele’s, Dylan’s, everyone’s favorite key, C, and of course, Roman Numerals.
Here are the first four chords of the verse:
Adele | Bb | F/A | Ab | Eb/G |
Dylan | C# | C#/G# | B | F#/A# |
Key of C | C | G/B | Bb | F/A |
Roman | I | V/3 | bVII | IV/3 |
Isn’t it pretty amazing how as soon as when we’re in the key of C, it feels easy?
As you can see, we go from chord I – V. Just using the 3rd in the bass. We then move that idea down a tone.
Here’s the next half of the verse.
Adele | Ebm/Gb | Bb/F | C7 Eb/F | Bb |
Dylan | F#m/A | C#/G# | D#7 F#/G# | C# |
Key of C | Fm/Ab | C/G | D7 G11 | C |
Roman | IVm/m3 | I/5 | IIx7 V11 | I |
This half of the verse is slightly more complicated. First up we have a IVm chord, with its m3rd in the bass. Next, it gets easier as we play the I chord, with its 5th in the bass.
The final two bars have a II chord that has become major (secondary dominant). The V chord is an 11, we could also see this as a IV chord with its 9th in the bass. I’ve used both ways above. Finish on chord I.
Let’s now look at the chorus in the same way. Here’s the first half:
Adele | Eb | Bb/F | D/F# Eb/G | Bb |
Dylan | F# | C#/G# | F/A F#/A# | C# |
Key of C | F | C/G | E/G# F/A | C |
Roman | IV | I/V | IIIx/3 IV/3 | I |
Put these chords in C and it’s super easy! It’s just IV – I with its 5th in the bass.
The last two bars are the III chord that has become major (mediant major, IIIx), move that up a semitone and it’s a IV chord with its 3rd in the bass, finishing on chord I.
Let’s finish all this off by looking at the second half of that chorus, which looks like this:
Adele | Eb | Bb/F | Cm7 | F7 |
Dylan | F# | C#/G# | D#m7 | G#7 |
Key of C | F | C/G | Dm7 | G7 |
Roman | IV | I/V | II | V |
The first two bars are the same as the start of the chorus, the last two bars are just a II – V.
I know a keyboard player that plays everything in the key of C, he then uses his transpose button for every song. After checking out Make You Feel My Love’s chords, he’s starting to make sense!
Taking this guy’s advice, the verse in the key of C looks like this:
| C | G/B | Bb | F/A |
| Fm/Ab | C/G | D7 G11 | C |
And here’s the chorus:
| F | C/G | E/G# F/A | C |
| F | C/G | Dm7 | G7 |
I guess this is why somebody invented the capo. But saying that, and I’ll stop after this, promise. On the guitar, it sounds best in the key of D, try this for the verse:
| D | A/C# | C | G/B |
| Gm/Bb | D/A | E7 A11 | D |
And here’s the chorus:
| G | D/A | F#/A# G/B | D |
| G | D/A | Em7 | A7 |
