Lost in Music Chords: Exploring Modal Interchange
Lost in Music features a mesmerising chord progression that blurs the line between D Aeolian (VI) and D Dorian (II).
If the tune were purely in D Dorian, we’d expect a Bm7b5 and a G major. In Aeolian, however, those chords would become Bbmaj7 and Gm. Nile Rodgers cleverly moves between the two modes—Dorian until the Bbmaj7, then briefly Aeolian—creating a hypnotic sense of lift and release.
