From MySpace to the West End!

Like Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen leveraged MySpace to build a fanbase in the mid-’00s, eventually catching the attention of record labels.

Her debut album, Alright, Still, was released in 2006 after a bidding war that saw Regal Recordings secure her signature. The album, aided by Mark Ronson and the hit single Smile, mixed reggae, ska, and pop, and quickly captured the British public’s interest.

The follow-up, It’s Not Me, It’s You (2009), shifted towards an electro-pop and country style. Singles like Not Fair and The Fear did well, leading to a world tour, a main stage performance at Glastonbury, and sales of 2.5 million copies.

Lily Allen’s third album, Sheezus (2014), wasn’t as successful, though the bonus track Somewhere Only We Know achieved commercial success. Originally by Keane, the cover featured in a Christmas and charity campaign and sold over 1 million copies.

Her fourth album, No Shame (2018), returned to some of the reggae influences of her debut but dealt with themes of marital breakdown and substance abuse. While it showed a more mature side of Lily, it was met with poor sales and streaming numbers.

Since then, Lily has focused more on acting, starring in the West End production 2:22 A Ghost Story and playing Elizabeth Taylor in How to Build a Girl.
