Kool & The Gang: From Jungle Boogie to Global Celebration
Formed in 1964, Kool & The Gang didn’t hit the mainstream until 1973, with their breakthrough track Jungle Boogie. Despite releasing four albums before this success, it was the infectious instrumental groove of Jungle Boogie that finally put them on the map.
However, realising that a singer would be essential for sustained success and a more glamorous lifestyle, the band brought in James “J.T.” Taylor (no, not the acoustic guitar virtuoso!) and enlisted a new producer. With this change, Kool & The Gang entered their most successful period, churning out hits like Celebration, Get Down On It, and Ladies Night.
Though their chart-topping days have passed, Kool & The Gang have continued to release albums and tour globally, with their latest release appearing in 2021. In total, they’ve sold 70 million albums worldwide, cementing their place as one of the most iconic bands of the 70s and 80s.
