Judy Garland: The Voice Behind Over The Rainbow

Judy Garland shot to worldwide fame when she sang Over The Rainbow in the 1939 blockbuster The Wizard of Oz, at just sixteen years old. Amazingly, she had already appeared in twelve films before this iconic role.

In total, Judy made forty-one films throughout her career, beginning in 1929 with The Big Revue and ending in 1967, after being dismissed from the production of Valley Of The Dolls.

She became the first woman to win a Grammy for Album of the Year with Judy at Carnegie Hall in 1961, a landmark live recording. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her the 8th greatest female star in American cinema history.

One of her most celebrated adult roles came in A Star Is Born—a film that seems to get remade for every generation. After the original 1937 version with Janet Gaynor, Judy starred in the 1954 remake, followed by Barbra Streisand in 1976 and Lady Gaga in 2018. Whoever takes on the role in 2060 likely hasn’t even been born yet!

While Over The Rainbow remains her signature tune, Judy also found success with Puttin’ On The Ritz and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas—the latter of which has, remarkably, racked up over three times as many Spotify streams as Over The Rainbow.
