Gimme Some Lovin’ Chords: The Driving Octave Riff and Bluesy Extensions
The main riff is essentially an octave, but the root note is hammered on from the b7, creating the unusual-sounding chord G7omit3.
The Hammond organ riff uses extensions of the 6th and b7th. In the Blues Brothers version, this part is performed by a horn section, but you can replicate it on guitar by incorporating the chord extensions.
The bridge is the only real chord progression in the song, moving through I – bIIIx – IV – bVIx. This progression is reminiscent of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, though the chord order differs.
The chorus varies throughout—check out the TAB lesson for multiple ways to play it and all other sections: Gimme Some Lovin’ – Guitar Lesson with TAB.
The TAB also covers the Blues Brothers version, which is more repetitive and easier to follow. This makes the song more accessible for singers, with a key that works perfectly for a covers band!
Before diving into TAB, start with the original in the key of G. Here’s a chord chart detailing the more complex arrangement.

With iReal Pro, you can easily change the key. If someone asks you to play it in E, however, they’re probably referring to the Blues Brothers version—which is different—so we’ll take a closer look at that as well.

Gimme Some Lovin’ Chords: The Blues Brothers’ Simplified Cover
The Blues Brothers version differs from the Spencer Davis original in several key ways.
First, it’s in a different key. Second, as a covers band themselves, they simplified the arrangement, playing each section consistently throughout.
Main riff
The intro is almost identical to the instrumental section that returns later. The main difference is that the first riff is repeated more often during the intro:
||: E7omit3 :|| x4
||: E7 | E6 E7 E6 | E | E :|| E7omit3 | E7omit3 |
The verse and chorus in this cover use just the riff—simple and effective:
||: E7omit3 :||
Bridge
The bridge remains consistent, following the I – bIIIx – IV – bVIx progression. In this key, it’s easy to see the similarity to Kurt Cobain’s breakthrough single:
| E | G | A | C |
Here’s a chord chart for comparison with the Spencer Davis Group version. This is why many cover bands opt for the Blues Brothers’ version—it’s far easier to play!

Should You Learn the The Spencer Davis Group or Blues Brothers version?
There are two versions of this song, and for some reason, whenever it’s called on a gig, it’s usually the cover version. On the radio or in DJ sets, however, it’s typically the original!
Originally released by The Spencer Davis Group in 1966, it reached the top 10 in seven countries, including #2 in the U.K.
In 1980, the Blues Brothers’ soundtrack featured a cover with a simpler arrangement in a lower key, helping it reach the top 20 in the U.S.
You’ll benefit from studying both versions, as the key, lyrics, and arrangement all differ. Doing so will give you the tools to translate ideas from one version to the other.
