Faith’s chords and progressions

Before the song starts, there’s a free-time church organ part which is pretty hard to define at first. At first, when it fades in, it took me a while to work out what was actually going on…

Thinking in the key of G, using a capo, it seems as if perhaps it was written on the guitar. Here’s what I believe the chords are for the intro.

||: G Csus4 C | Am Dsus4 D :||
| G Csus4 | Am Dsus4 | G | G |

Once the song kicks in, we get a master class in how you can twist and turn the I – IV movements (top of this chord progression list for a reason).

Moving from I – IV is the verse, and from IV – I, in the bridge. The chorus just stays on chord I, so simple!

The end of the bridge moves from I to VI, via the 7th note of the scale. Usually, this is done using chord V or I as a passing chord but in Faith, we use chord VI instead, very unusual, like this: GEm/F#Em.

This is the section that tells me Faith must have been written in this key, using a capo to get in George Michael’s register.

During the solo, add 6 chords for a more rock n roll feel over chord I, and a dom7 over chord IV.

Faith was not supposed to be a single

As the #1 single of the year in 1988, George Michael‘s Faith topped the charts the world over. Released as a single from his debut album with the same name, the song was developed over several months.

Originally it wasn’t intended as a single and that legendary guitar solo was added much later in the process.

Most guitar players think of this song as in B, playing barre CAGED chords but it actually makes much more sense if you think of it in the key of G, placing a capo on fret 4.

The tuning is overall a bit sharp, if you want to play along with the original recording as you practice the song, tune your guitar to a tuner set to 446 Hz, not 440. My online guitar tuner can do this.

Intermediate Acoustic Songs

Most intermediate acoustic tunes can’t be played using just basic open-position chords. We have to move up the fretboard and play CAGED barre chords as well.

We incorporate bass lines, add licks, extend chords, and play vocal melodies. Most importantly, we invent second guitar parts and play these songs together.
