Chord Progressions – What’s Going On?
There are two ways to approach this song:
- Acoustic – Use a capo on fret 4, think in the key of G, and play solo.
- Electric – Play in a band, but now think in the key of B without a capo to match the original recording.

Before the tune starts, there’s a free-time church organ part that’s pretty tricky to define—it took me a while to figure out exactly what was going on…
Here’s a version of the intro arranged for guitar with no capo, just playing the chords:
Thinking in the key of G, and using a capo on fret 4, it becomes easier to incorporate the melody. This changes the chord shapes, and here’s what I think you should play:
Verse
Here’s the verse as played on electric—keep it simple!
The little dot above each 8th note means it should be played short—like a 16th note. It’s written as 8ths just to make reading easier.
Here’s how I would adapt this part for acoustic guitar:
Bridge
The bridge is the longest section. Here’s how it looks for electric:
There are a few rhythmic variations here, so be sure to read the whole part carefully.
For acoustic, the chords feel much more familiar, and you can clearly see that the movements are all very common.
Chorus
Finally, the chorus is the easiest section—you already know it. Here it is without a capo:

Play all sections both with and without a capo. Tune slightly sharp, then play along with the backing tracks.
