Eddie wrote Knock On Wood with Steve Cropper!

As the founder of the vocal group The Falcons, Eddie Floyd learned a thing or two about the industry. Having recruited Wilson Pickett and had two “almost there” singles in You’re So Fine, and I Found A Love, he could clearly see how all success was down to having tunes.

When Wilson left, Eddie disbanded the band, signed for Stax as a songwriter, and began writing for his old pal Wilson. Being at Stax meant he got access to the house band Booker T. & The M.G.’s in general and Steve Cropper (guitarist), in particular.

The label environment also meant he was surrounded by artists like Albert King, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Wilson Picket, and Isaac Hayes. This must have all inspired him to not just write but also release his own stuff, as a solo artist.

His first album was named after a single and his signature song, Knock On Wood in 1967. The tune itself was released a year earlier and had gone to #1.

Knock On Wood was co-written with Steve Cropper. Apparently, the night they wrote it, there was a thunderstorm, hence the lyrics, “It’s like thunder, lightning, the way you love me is frightening.”

Following the album, Eddie did get into the top 100 several times, but nothing stuck, he even tried covers of established tunes like My Girl and Bring It On Home To Me, but nothing managed the heights of Knock On Wood.

Eddie Floyd may never have managed to follow his classic up with anything that became as big but he still put out albums until as late as 2013, with Down By The Sea, his 17th studio album.
