Eddie Floyd Wrote Knock On Wood with Steve Cropper
As the founder of the vocal group The Falcons, Eddie Floyd learned early on that success in the music industry came down to one thing—having the tunes. After recruiting Wilson Pickett and coming close with singles like You’re So Fine and I Found A Love, Eddie understood the importance of great songs.
When Wilson left the group, Eddie disbanded The Falcons and signed to Stax Records as a songwriter, where he began writing material for his old bandmate. At Stax, he gained access to the house band, Booker T. & The M.G.’s—particularly guitarist Steve Cropper.
Working in such a fertile creative environment, surrounded by legends like Otis Redding, Albert King, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes, and Wilson Pickett, it’s no surprise that Eddie soon stepped into the spotlight himself.
His debut solo album was named after his first hit and signature tune, Knock On Wood, released in 1967. The song itself had come out a year earlier and reached #1. Co-written with Steve Cropper during a thunderstorm, the weather made its way into the lyrics: “It’s like thunder, lightning, the way you love me is frightening.”
While Eddie charted in the Top 100 a few more times and even recorded covers of classics like My Girl and Bring It On Home To Me, nothing ever quite matched the success of Knock On Wood.
Still, he remained active, releasing albums well into the 21st century—Down By The Sea in 2013 marked his 17th studio release. Even if he never topped his biggest hit, Eddie Floyd’s legacy is cemented with one of soul’s most iconic tunes.
