Merriweather found success through producer Mark Ronson!
Australian singer Daniel Merriweather first began working with Mark Ronson in 2003, appearing on Ronson’s Here Comes The Fuzz.
Following a few more collaborations, the pair created Merriweather’s solo album, which was released in 2009.
Influences such as Stevie Wonder and Jeff Buckley are clearly present, though never to the point of imitation. Melodic echoes of these great singers can be heard in Merriweather’s work, yet they never compromise the integrity of the compositions.
Ronson’s production on Love & War may feel quite full-on at first listen—especially in contrast to the stripped-back simplicity of Amy Winehouse’s 2006 release Back To Black.
Personally, I think it showcases Ronson’s depth as a producer, tailoring his approach to suit each artist’s voice.
Unfortunately, Merriweather hasn’t followed up that promising album with any major hits. Red, which I believed was destined to be huge, never quite caught on.
