Aslan reformed to release their signature song!
Formed in Dublin in the early ‘80s, Aslan is a legendary Irish rock band that took their name from the Lion in The Chronicles of Narnia.
It took the boys 6 years before their debut album, Feel No Shame (1988), was released. Here we find their first big tune, This Is.
Following the debut and success with This Is, the band split due to internal conflict, mainly relating to the lead singer’s drug habits. As he left to form Dignam & Goff, Aslan recruited a new singer but soon realized this wasn’t the way forward.
In 1993, during a brief reunion for a charity gig, they got their act together and reformed.
The result was the album Goodbye Charlie Moonhead (1994) with the first single, Crazy World, released before the album.
Crazy World would become the band’s signature song and a legendary tune with amazing longevity, mainly thanks to Irish solo performers in bars all around the world.
The second single from the album, Where’s The Sun, also did well but hasn’t stayed in the public consciousness as Crazy World did.
Following this first album after reuniting, the band hasn’t come up with any more tunes of the same calibre.
As for covers, on what may be their best album, the 1999 Live In Dublin, we find Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, but without the intro licks. The album finishes with Angie.
On the 2013 album Uncase’d, we also find John Lennon’s Jealous Guy and Rod Stewart’s Maggie May.
In 2023, Aslan’s lead singer, Christy Dignam, passed away at the age of 63 following a life of drug-taking and a decade of treating cancer.
The band found a new lead singer (again!) and is back touring.
