Alicia Keys: Songs in A Minor and the Rise to Stardom
Not many singers break into the charts instantly with their debut album. Usually, it takes months of preparation, a soft release, a build-up, and a few singles before an audience truly catches on.
However, when Alicia Keys released Songs in A Minor in 2001, she could never have anticipated the massive success it would bring. Selling 50,000 copies on the first day of release, the album would eventually sell over 12 million copies worldwide.
Following Songs in A Minor, Alicia Keys went on to release more albums and star in major feature films. By the end of the decade, she had become a household name, with over 30 million albums sold and numerous awards to her name.
The debut album earned 5 Grammy Awards, a feat only Christopher Cross and Norah Jones had previously achieved. Some of her best-known tracks include This Girl Is on Fire, Empire State of Mind, If I Ain’t Got You, No One, and the debut single that started it all, Fallin’.
In 2009, one of the biggest hits was Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind from his album The Blueprint 3. As it entered the charts at #1, Alicia must have known that her next release, The Element of Freedom, would be yet another success.
Empire State of Mind was initially released as a single in October 2009, and the “Broken Down” version followed a few months later in February 2010, making the song a top-ten hit twice.
