Country Rave Chaos: The Rednex Phenomenon
Swedish comedy band Rednex had a clear and fun vision: blend country music with Eurodance and Techno. The result? Instant fame—and instant division.
Their debut album Sex and Violins dropped in 1994, sparking a love-it-or-hate-it reaction among the public. Leading the charge was their signature tune Cotton Eye Joe, a reimagined version of the old folk song Cotton-Eyed Joe.
The track became a massive hit, reaching the top 5 in 17 countries and selling over 2 million copies. Rednex quickly became everyone’s favourite band to either champion or mock.
Beneath the simple recipe—banjo, fiddle, male and female vocals, and a pounding dance beat—was none other than pop mastermind Max Martin.
The debut also featured Old Pop in an Oak and Wish You Were Here (not the Pink Floyd classic!).
Their follow-up album, …Farm Out!, didn’t replicate the same success, even though it included a version of The Devil Went Down to Georgia—oddly absent from the tracklist on Spotify.
Still, they struck gold again in Europe with The Spirit of the Hawk, which became one of the top ten best-selling singles in Germany during the 2000s.
