The Killers: Somebody Told Me Mr. Brightside is Human
Formed in Las Vegas in 2001 by guitarist Dave and vocalist Brandon, The Killers finalised their lineup a year later with Mark on bass and Ronnie on drums.
Their debut album Hot Fuss arrived in 2004, featuring what would become the band’s two biggest hits: Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me.
The album topped the U.K. charts, with its first two singles doing the same in the indie charts. Mr. Brightside grew into an anthem, now a staple in every cover band’s repertoire—often saved for the final number or encore.
The follow-up album Sam’s Town was released in 2006. Its lead single When You Were Young performed well, although it didn’t quite become the universal go-to that Mr. Brightside did. The second single, Bones, had some success, but arguably lacked the same explosive chorus the band had previously mastered.
Day & Age landed in 2008, continuing the trend with another strong lead single. Human had the clarity and simplicity that made it easy for fans to sing along, once again delivering that signature Killers moment.
U.K. TV show Fast and Loose featured a hilarious segment called interpretive dance, where comedian David Armand mimed the lyrics to Human—check the playlist above!
Since their first three albums, The Killers have released four more studio records. However, as of 2023, no tune has made the same cultural impact as 2008’s Human.
Cover bands and DJs are still playing Mr. Brightside almost two decades later—and it never fails to go off.
