Queen’s Greatest Hits: A Journey Through Their Iconic Albums

English rock band Queen formed in 1970 when the band Smile welcomed Freddie Mercury as their new frontman.

Let’s take a journey through Queen’s albums from 1973 to 1991, highlighting some of their biggest tunes.

Their first two albums didn’t have any major hits, but the third, Sheer Heart Attack (1974), introduced the iconic Killer Queen, which reached #2 in the U.K.

In 1975, Queen released A Night At The Opera, which contained their signature song, Bohemian Rhapsody. Remarkably, no other singles from this album became as big, but Bohemian Rhapsody alone catapulted the band to international fame.

Their follow-up, A Day At The Races (1976), produced two notable singles: Somebody To Love and Tie Your Mother Down.

By 1977, Queen had established themselves as global superstars. Their album News Of The World featured two anthems, We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You, which became part of the soundtrack for countless events worldwide.

In 1978, Jazz was released, continuing the trend with hits like Don’t Stop Me Now and Fat Bottomed Girls.

The following year, 1979/1980, brought The Game, which produced Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Another One Bites The Dust—two tracks that displayed the band’s growing versatility.

With so many hit songs, Queen released their Greatest Hits album, followed by a soundtrack for the film Flash Gordon (1980).

In 1982, Hot Space was released, featuring the iconic Under Pressure, a collaboration with David Bowie, which became one of their biggest hits.

By 1984, Queen had solidified their place among the greatest rock bands in the world with the release of The Works, containing three huge singles: Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, and Hammer To Fall.

The band’s legendary performance at Live Aid in 1985 cemented their status as rock royalty.

In 1986, A Kind Of Magic was released, producing three big hits: the title track, One Vision, and Who Wants To Live Forever. The latter song, with its haunting lyrics, tragically foreshadowed Freddie Mercury’s battle with AIDS, which he was diagnosed with in 1987.

Although the pace of album releases slowed in the late ‘80s, 1989 brought The Miracle, with the standout single I Want It All.

Their final album, Innuendo (1991), was released in February and featured three major hits: Innuendo, These Are The Days Of Our Lives, and The Show Must Go On. Sadly, Freddie passed away in November of the same year.

With 300 million albums sold, Queen had earned their place as one of the greatest British bands of all time.
