The Knack: Carried by My Sharona Since ’79
Formed in Los Angeles in 1978, The Knack exploded onto the scene the following year with their debut single My Sharona, which became a global hit and sold over 10 million copies.
Their first album, Get The Knack, featured one other charting single—Good Girls Don’t—which hit #1 in Canada, but that marked the peak of their chart success.
Critics were quick to accuse the band of being Beatles copycats, largely due to their matching outfits and an album cover that closely resembled Meet The Beatles. Whether it was homage or imitation didn’t matter—My Sharona overshadowed everything else. It remains a Saturday night favourite for working bands even decades later.
After two underperforming follow-up albums and a few years on the road, The Knack split in 1982. They later reformed with a shifting lineup and released Serious Fun (1991), Zoom (1998), and Normal as the Next Guy (2001).
Their final release came posthumously in 2012 with Rock & Roll Is Good For You, a collection of early demos. None of these later releases made much of an impact, and it’s safe to say My Sharona has carried the weight of The Knack’s legacy ever since its release.
