I Will Wait… for Redemption? The Mumford & Sons Saga

Echoing the sounds of Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, John Martyn, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Neil Young, there was, between 2004 and 2014, a folk revival in the U.S. and U.K.

Similar acoustic artists and bands entered the scene, starting with Ray LaMontagne in 2004, followed by Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver in 2008, The Lumineers in 2012, and Vance Joy in 2014.

Mumford & Sons released their debut right in the middle of this wave in 2009, with a follow-up arriving in 2012. Their timing was perfect. With hit tunes like Sigh No More, The Cave, Little Lion Man, and their signature song I Will Wait, Mumford & Sons seemed unstoppable.

Two more albums followed in 2015 and 2018. Although these didn’t produce any major hits, the band continued to tour worldwide. As an established act, they appeared untouchable.

Then came the pandemic, and it seemed to get to one of their members, who had a moment of misjudgement, believing he could express support for someone controversial on Twitter.

After a single tweet supporting a critic of Antifa, Winston Marshall left the band in 2021. His wife had left him a year earlier, though whether the two events are connected is unclear. Winston is now a podcaster.

We’re all waiting to see what Mumford & Sons will do next. No doubt their lyrics will be scrutinised. If they ever get cancelled, could a reunion with Winston and his banjo be on the cards?
