Like A Hurricane Chords: From Aeolian Progressions to Soloing Mastery

Once you start playing Like A Hurricane‘s chords, it’s easy to understand why Neil Young wouldn’t stop soloing—this is perfect Aeolian (minor) territory, ideal for soloing all day long!

Another great aspect of Like A Hurricane is the verse melody, which perfectly targets the chord notes.

In the TAB section of this lesson, you’ll learn from this both for writing your own tunes and for improvising solos. Here’s a link to that part of the lesson: Like A Hurricane – Guitar Lesson with TAB.

Verse

In terms of the actual chords, we stay within the key, using these in A minor:

||: Am (VI) | Am | G (V) | G |
| Fmaj7 (IV) | Fmaj7 | Em7 (III) | G :||

Chorus

The chorus progression, in contrast, feels a bit more straightforward compared to the carefully crafted verse. It follows a simple I – V – IV – V pattern, like this:

||: C (I) G (V) | F (IV) G :|| x3
| F | F (Fsus2 F) | F | F | (half time feel)

Still, the lyrics are solid, and the halftime feel over the final four bars of the F chord is excellent. By the time we return to that fabulous verse progression and it’s time to solo, all is forgiven!

Here’s a chord chart I made for you.

One of Neil’s favourites

Released in 1977, Like A Hurricane must have been one of Neil Young’s favourite tunes, as he included it in most of his gigs, on two compilations (Decade and Greatest Hits), and on the incredible Unplugged album.

He wrote it in 1975, during a time when he had damaged his vocal cords and couldn’t sing for a while. Perhaps this is why the focus shifted to creating something so incredible to solo over…

The album version runs over 8 minutes, mainly consisting of Neil’s iconic solos. This is likely why he loves it so much—personally, I do too!
