The Power of Being Real
Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi has been open about his mental health journey for years, but it reached a pivotal moment in 2023 during his Glastonbury Festival performance. Mid-set, battling intense anxiety and symptoms of his recently diagnosed Tourette’s syndrome, Capaldi struggled to continue—but the crowd rallied, passionately singing along as he faltered.
That day, he apologized to fans and revealed his need to “take another wee break” because his mental and physical health had been pushed too far. In retrospect, he called the incident a “blessing in disguise”—a crucial awakening that compelled him to step back and confront his struggles instead of hoping it would pass.
During a candid appearance on Theo Von’s podcast (July 2025), Capaldi reflected on the Glastonbury set as possibly the “lowest moment” of his life, being hit by an overwhelming mental and physical episode that left no choice but to seek help. Over the next two years, he embarked on a recovery journey: therapy, medication adjustments—including starting an antipsychotic—better diet and fitness, and a gradual return to stability.
Then, in a triumphant twist of fate, Lewis made his surprise return to Glastonbury 2025. This time, he delivered an emotionally charged yet controlled 35-minute set—including his new single Survive, which soared to No. 1 on the UK charts. He closed with a heartfelt performance of Someone You Loved—the song he couldn’t complete at the festival two years earlier.
The Power of Authenticity & Vulnerability
One of the most compelling aspects of Lewis’s story is how intimately he connects emotional and vocal expression. Unlike singing coaches who advocate controlled techniques, Lewis insists that he must truly feel the lyrics to deliver them—he can’t “fake it”. This raw approach has helped to cement his status as one of the most celebrated voices of the last decade.
Some of his most beloved songs include:
- Someone You Loved – the breakout hit that made him an international star
- Before You Go – a song dedicated to his late aunt
- Wish You the Best – another chart-topper off his second album
- Forget Me – his upbeat lead single accompanied by a humorous video
These hits underscore Lewis’s emotional depth and musical versatility.
Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now
In April 2023, Lewis released a documentary chronicling the turbulence of fame, his return home, and the mental health challenges underpinning his meteoric rise. On Netflix, the film offers an unflinchingly honest portrait of the man behind the music. Watch it here: Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now
I really feel Lewis exemplifies the modern celebrity who refuses to hide his struggles. His artistry is inseparable from his emotional honesty—proving that you don’t have to be polished to be powerful. He isn’t just one of our most talented young British singers; he’s also a deeply human one, bravely navigating life in the spotlight—and inviting us all to feel along with him.
