Donna Summer: The Queen of Disco and Her Legendary Legacy
Donna Summer’s journey to stardom began with her first break as a performer in the musical Hair, though she had to relocate to Munich, Germany to fulfil her contract.
In Germany, she connected with songwriters and producers who helped her release Love to Love You Baby (1975) and I Feel Love (1977). The latter became legendary for its groundbreaking use of synthesizers, paving the way for electronic dance music.
In 1979, Donna released Hot Stuff, another major hit, produced by her frequent collaborator, Italian producer Giorgio Moroder. He was behind many of Donna’s biggest hits, and together, they became the architects of the late ’70s disco era.
Donna Summer was crowned the Queen of Disco, while Giorgio earned the title of Father of Disco thanks to their successful run of hits.
Some of Donna Summer’s most iconic tunes include On the Radio, Bad Girls, She Works Hard for the Money, along with the aforementioned Love to Love You Baby, I Feel Love, and Hot Stuff.
Donna Summer sold 100 million records over the course of her career.
