The Voice!

Ranked as the second-best female singer of all time (just after Aretha Franklin according to Rolling Stone magazine), Whitney Houston had an astonishing career spanning 25 years.

Signed in 1983 at the tender age of 19, her self-titled debut album came in 1985 and went to #1 in six countries.

Big tunes were Saving All My Love For You, How Will I Know, and Greatest Love Of All.

Two years later, the follow-up, simply named Whitney had her signature song on it as the lead single. I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) was an enormous success, topping the charts in 18 countries, and selling six million copies in the U.S. alone.

To this day, I Wanna Dance With Somebody is still played by DJs and working bands the world over, if the band has a singer with a big enough range that is!

One more tune came from this album in Where Do Broken Hearts Go. As it went to #1 in the U.S., Whitney set a new record with seven consecutive #1’s. A record that still hasn’t been broken.

Her third album, I’m Your Baby Tonight (1990) also did well although none of the tunes on it has had the same lasting success as what the previous two albums achieved.

Funnily enough, the most successful tune didn’t make the album at all, Higher Love only featured on the Japanese edition. In 2019, a Norwegian DJ reworked Higher Love and scored another Whitney Houston #1, although to be fair, the competition during 2019 wasn’t nearly as great as it was back in the early ’90s…

Following her third album, Whitney appeared in the 1992 film Bodyguard and released the super intense I Will Always Love You (Dolly Parton cover). Selling 20 million copies worldwide, it is the best-selling single of all time.

Spending 14 weeks at #1, Whitney broke another record for a female artist and then proceeded to collect most awards available.

The soundtrack from Bodyguard contained two more smash hits in I’m Every Woman, a Chaka Khan cover, which was released when I Will Always Love You was still #1! She also dropped I Have Nothing and broke yet another record as she was the first artist to have three tunes in the top 11 during the same week.

To follow up on the insane success of the film and soundtrack for Bodyguard, Whitney teamed up with Missy Elliot, Babyface, and Lauryn Hill for her 1998 release, My Love Is Your Love. Here we got the title track and When You Believe, a duet with Mariah Carey, also released for the animated film The Prince Of Egypt.

After this ‘98 release, we get a few greatest hits and Christmas albums from The Voice. Her final album, I Look To You came in 2009 but made little impact.
