Someone You Loved: The song with perfect beginner chords
Start by placing a capo on fret 1. The chord progression for Someone You Loved follows the I – V – VI – IV pattern, which I listed as #3 on my chord progression list for modern hits.
In the key of C, this is: C – G – Am – F. At the end of a verse and most choruses, we also play a quick G on beat 4 before restarting the progression. Almost all sections use this sequence, with variation coming from how you comp—making it an ideal lesson for beginners.
For more guidance, the TAB lesson offers six ways to play these chords. Once you can play them individually, you’ll be able to blend them in an improvised way: Someone You Loved – Guitar Lesson with TAB.
Middle 8
The middle 8 is the only section that deviates from the standard progression. It starts on II, moving from F at the end of chorus 2, and creates a similar feeling to a minor fall (I – VI).
From Dm7, the sequence goes to VI – V, with a quick VI before repeating. In the final two bars, we omit the Am7, pausing before a chorus breakdown:
| Dm7 | Am7 | G | G Am7 |
| Dm7 | Am7 | G | N.C |
When you can play all the TAB, use this chord chart as a reference to understand Someone You Loved’s true chord structure.

My chord chart clearly shows when to include the extra G on beat 4—and when not to (skip it in the bridge and chorus 2). Seeing it alongside the lyrics often makes this even clearer.
Using a simple chord chart like this also makes it easy to share with band mates. If you use the iReal Pro app, you can quickly change the key to suit your needs.
