Madeleine sings like she was born in a different era!
Madeleine Peyroux is an American jazz singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Often compared to Billie Holiday for her vocal similarities, Peyroux’s second solo album only had one original tune on it, Don’t Wait Too Long.
Madeleine started out singing jazz and blues songs on the streets of Paris where she had moved to with her mother at the age of 13.
After honing her skills on the streets of the French capital, she joined a couple of bands and started touring around Europe.
By 1996 she had been discovered by Atlantic Records and recorded her debut album, Dreamland.
This consisted of old classics from the 30s and 40s by Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith.
In 2004, the album Careless Love was released, now with songs written by Bob Dylan (You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go) and Leonard Cohen (Dance Me To The End Of Love).
Careless Love was very successful with half a million copies sold. Only one original song was featured on it but this was enough to bring Madeleine Peyroux worldwide recognition.
Since the breakthrough album, Madeleine has toured the world and released many more albums, now with mainly original material.
