Love Me Tender’s chords, progressions, and TAB

What great chords Love Me Tender by Elvis have, they’re so good we don’t even need rhythm! In the key of D, we get mainly open-position chords strummed in a way reminiscent of a beginner.

The verse consists of two lines that are almost identical, like this:

| D D/A | E7 E7/B | A7 | D D/A |
| D D/A | E7 E7/B | A7 A7/B | D D/A |

Only in the second to last bar do we vary it by adding B in the bass of that A7 chord. So subtle, so great.

These verse chords, using roman numerals are I – IIx – V – I.

For the bridge, the chord progression gets more complicated, like this:

| D F#7/C# | Bm D7/A | G Gm6 | D D/A |
| D B7 | E7 E7/B | A7 A7/B | D D/A |

Using roman numerals, that’s I – IIIx – VI – I in the first two bars. Then IV – IVm – I. The final line is I – VIx – IIx – V – I.

What you really need to play this perfectly, note for note like that Elvis recording is TAB. Should you play this with the original recording and it feels a bit wrong, try tuning up to 442Hz. My online guitar tuner can help with this.
