The most played artist on British radio between 84-04!

One of the kindest men in the business, George Michael started out with the pop duo Wham! in 1981.

Together with Andrew Ridgley, George Michael released tunes such as Last Christmas, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, I’m Your Man, and Club Tropicana.

Culminating with a tour of China in 1985, George Michael transitioned from the band to a solo career. As he did so, he released a few singles before the debut album, including Careless Whisper and a duet with Aretha Franklin in I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me).

A great example of George Michael’s kindness is how even though he wrote Careless Whisper himself, he shared the publishing with his old pal from Wham, even releasing it under the name Wham! Featuring George Michael. This would turn out to be very generous as it went #1 in over 20 countries, selling 6 million copies!

In 1987, his debut solo album was released, reaching #1, and stayed there for 12 weeks. Best tunes include the title track Faith, and Father Figure.

His second solo album had a single Freedom! ‘90 on it and that was a huge hit, and the following year he released Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, a duet with Elton John.

1996 arrives and another album with more hits in Jesus To A Child and Fastlove. These would prove to be his last big tunes.

At the time of his death in 2016, George Michael had racked up sales of 115 million records.

I’ve mentioned how George was known for his kindness, this was especially evident when after his death, several charities came forward about how he on multiple occasions had donated money, always making sure that they didn’t tell anyone it had been done in his name.
