A female Harry Styles?

Just like Harry Styles, Camila Cabello first appeared on Simon Cowell’s singing competition X Factor. Harry did it in the U.K. in 2010, Camila in the U.S. in 2012.

Her audition song was Aretha Franklin’s Respect, which couldn’t be aired because of copyright issues (Harry sang Isn’t She Lovely).

Just like Mr Styles, she didn’t make it very far in the competition, but was called back and then put into a band created on the show, not as a boy band called One Direction, but as a girl band named Fifth Harmony.

Following laying the foundation for the band on the show, she started recording and touring with Fifth Harmony for a couple of years. As all was seemingly going well, Camila started to venture outside the group to write and record with other artists.

The result was a single with Shawn Mendes called I Know What You Did Last Summer (2015), and Bad Things with Machine Gun Kelly (2016).

Both these tunes were released in the boys’ names with Camila as a featured artist. Later that year, Camila revealed she was leaving Fifth Harmony to pursue a solo career.

The first release came in another collaboration, this time with a Norwegian DJ, Cashmere Cat. The tune, Love Incredible, was released in early 2017.

This was followed by a world tour as a supporting act for Bruno Mars and two singles, Crying In The Club and her big break, Havana, both released in 2017.

Havana became huge with 19 million sales worldwide. It was the song of the year in 2018, the most-streamed song by a female artist on Spotify, and reached #1 in 23 countries.

A few more singles followed, for example, Sangria Wine with Pharrell Williams, but none had the same impact as Havana.

Fast forward to 2019, and her next big tune became even bigger than Havana. A collaboration with Shawn Mendes (again) resulted in Señorita, which topped the charts in 40 countries!

With 16 million sales worldwide, it was the third-best-selling single of 2019. But most impressively, it is the 12th most-streamed tune on Spotify, of all time!

As of early 2024, Señorita has been streamed 2.6 billion times. On YouTube, the video has been played 1.6 billion times.

Her best-performing tune since Señorita is Bam Bam, a 2022 collaboration with Ed Sheeran.
