An American roots musician!
Ben Harper is an American roots musician who has stretched his appeal around the globe by recording covers of Marvin Gaye’s tune Sexual Healing and The Verve‘s The Drugs Don’t Work.
Harper’s first album, Welcome To The Cruel World (1994), was followed by Fight For Your Mind only a year later. Armed with these two albums, the word of Ben Harper began to spread.
Two big tunes from these albums were Waiting On An Angel and Another Lonely Day, both perfect beginner guitar material using open position chords, just tuned down a tone.
Often touring Europe and other non-American territories, Harper has created a dedicated following the world over.
One of his most successful collaborations happened with the vocal group The Blind Boys Of Alabama. Harper recorded the seriously groovy There Will Be A Light with these distinguished men in 2004.
Initially famous for his Weissenborn slide skills, Ben Harper has shown some serious talent on most guitars. His band The Innocent Criminals isn’t bad either!
An important lesson Ben can teach new artists is that playing other people’s songs is not something you should stop doing once you’ve “made it”. His versions of Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) and most recently Mercy Mercy Me (Marvin again) are proof of this.
