The barred chord shapes map out the fretboard for you!
All open position chord shapes can be turned into movable chords, these chords are usually fretted by replacing the nut of the guitar with your index finger.
Since it is easier to visualize the whole shape and then play selected parts of that shape it is a good idea to play both the whole shape as well as selected parts of the chord shape when you practice.
Everything you do on the guitar is based around these chord shapes, practice extensively!
5 Things To Remember about Barred Chord Shapes
- A triad has three notes, on the guitar these three notes are doubled up depending on the chord shape.
- A triad can be either major or minor.
- There are 5 major chord shapes that can be made movable thus allowing you to play, for example an E chord as an E shape.
- Similarly there are 5 minor chord shapes that can be made movable.
- Everything you do on a guitar starts with these five major and five minor chord shapes.
It is very important that you learn how to connect the 10 barred chords with each other, all over the neck.
Practice as in the video lessons, as well as using selected parts of the chord, for example, string 4, 3 and 2 for the Cm shape.
